GSoC-Proposal accepted!

It’s with great pleasure that I say, “I’ve been accepted for GSoC this year”. The results were updated in the 12th, April morning and even though there was some confusion at the beginning the day turned out to be a great day of my life. And if this will help any one, this is my proposal for GSoC.
GSoC Proposal for GNOME-FoieGras

As I’ve mentioned previously, GSoC for this year is progressing now. Google Summer of Code is a programme funded by Google to improve the FOSS community in the world. More on GSoC can be found here, Google Summer of Code 2007

I’ve applied for only one project, that is a Gnome project – creating a doc editor for their documentation system, Mallard. The code name for the doc editor is “Foie Gras” and it’s still only a few good ideas and plans. So it’ll have to be implemented completely during the SoC duration.

“Foie Gras” will be done in python and XML. So using this doc editor, writers will be able to edit wikis and XML related documents easily. So hope it’ll be a good asset for the future doc writers who are using Gnome related products, especially Ubuntu.

Also all my 2 fellow Vesessins who applied for the SoC, Lakshan
and Amila have been selected; so this really a great occasion for us and also it indicates the strength within Vesess. Also representating Vesess, special thank should goto Prabath who gave us a great support from the very begining. And also good luck and congrats to all the GSoC selected people out there and don’t lose your hope who hasn’t got selected this time. You may very well get the chance next time!

Google Summer of Code is On!!!

GSoC is back for year 2007.

If you don’t know about GSoC here what Google says.

“Google Summer of CodeTM is a program that offers student developers stipends to write code for various open source projects. Google will be working with a several open source, free software and technology-related groups to identify and fund several projects over a three month period. Historically, the program has brought together over 1,000 students with over 100 open source projects, to create hundreds of thousands of lines of code. The program, which kicked off in 2005, is now in its third year, following on from a very successful 2006.”

So if you are entusiastic about some open source projects such as various CMS projects or language such as PHP, Python, Ruby.etc or even sometimes languages such as Java, C# there are projects which you can help with and get exposured to the world.

Go to GSoC home page and have a look at this year accepted projects.

It started on 15th March and student aplication deadline is on 24th March. This is a chance you shouldn’t miss.

Vista Launch-Sri Lanka

On 15th February Microsoft did their islandwide Windows Vista launch. I have to say it was a remarkable ceremony and a very good planning.

The event started at right on the time and went on. I was surprised to see elephants and Kandian dancers in the celebration hall. The idea was to intergrate Sri Lankan traditions and customes with Microsoft Technologies, thereby giving the idea of “Sri Lankan Vista Launch” rather than just “Vista Launch”.

Also there were presents, much food, drinks and much more. Everyone was given a T-Shirt with Vista logo. And also there was a respectable amount of crowd ( I think it was more than 1000 ).

It was a good effort and I think their effort paid off at the end. Here are few pics of the event.
